Hair clips are super popular right now, so let’s use our creativity and make a DIY hair clip that we can wear or gift to others.
Why Hair Clips?
You may be wondering why hair clips are popular? Hey, your guess is as good as mine. My 11 year old niece told me that hair bows and hair ties “slay.” I said to myself, what does she know about slaying? I mean, hair bows have been around forever, she probably is just now learning about them.
Well, to my surprise, my little preteen was correct. I started noticing that there where big Hair clip displays in every store I went I visited. Hair bows, and hair clips, and ponytail holders, oh my!
Of course, me being the crafty Auntie, I started to think about making them. Though you can buy some hair accessories pretty inexpensively, you can add your own personality to them when you DIY your own.
These are not your grandma’s hair bows
Let me explain what this hair accessory trend a little more. It’s not the little bright pink bow that grandma clipped in your hair when you spent the night at her house. These are not the plastic little barettes that my mom put at the end of each ponytail to hold my braid in place.
Side bar: I used to wake up with an imprint of those barettes on my face. Oh the horror of growing up in the 80’s. LOL
These hair accessories are more like fashion. Hair clips, bows and headbands are truly part of the outfit now. They can come in many different styles and colors. They have pearls or rhinestones or flowers on them. You can get them super frilly and girly or all dark and goth. The possibilities are endless. Hair accessories.
DIY is ALWAYS better
Since the possibilities are endless, then your creativity can really have fun when making your own DIY hair clips. If you have a certain outfit that you want to match perfectly, you can create a custom piece. Wanna jazz up a basic outfit with just the right bling, no problem, just DIY it.
You can also include sentimental things in your DIY hair clip creations. Use pearls from grandma’s necklace or a pattern from your uncle’s tie, or lace from your mom’s prom dress. Then you DIY hair accessory will not only be pretty, but personal to you.
DIY Hair Clip Tutorial
I put together a video tutorial just to show you how easy and inexpensive it can be to create your own hair accessory masterpiece.
The first example is a DIY hair bow clip. It’s super flowy and girly with a vintage feel. You can take this same process though and make it your own.
Supplies needed:
- 55″-60″ of Ribbon or fabric (at least 1/2 inch wide)
- Hair clip
- 8″ of string
- Hot glue gun and hot glue
- Embellishments (I used stick on pearls)
Steps to make a DIY Bow Clip
- First, cut out 3 pieces of ribbon/fabric. 1-13inches, 1-20inches, 1-24inches.
- Take the 13 inch piece and bring the end to the center and over lap them. This is the begining of a bow. secure the ends together with a bit of hot glue.
- Now lay the string on the table. Lay the folded ribbon you just glued together across the string. Now take the 20″ length piece of ribbon. Fold it in half and place it right beneath the glued piece.
- Tie the string in a knot, combining the glued looped piece and the folded in half piece. This will create a bow.
- Hot glue the knot to the outside of the metal hair clip. Also hot glue the ends of the bow loops to the ends of the hair clip so they don’t flop around while wearing it.
- Take the last piece of ribbon and feed it through the back of the metal clip, ultimately tying a knot in the front around the bow. This will secure everything together.
- Add emblellishments like pearls, beads, rhinestones, etc. to make it your own. Make sure to super glue or hot glue them on to make them permanant.
These are the simplied steps. Watch the video for the hands on tutorial. (If you enjoyed this one, don’t forget to Subscribe to my youtube channel where I add many other fun crafts.)
